Green County Sheriff’s Office Detectives have largely completed their investigation into an officer witnessed death that occurred in a business parking lot along 17th Street near 12th Avenue in the City of Monroe on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
Video evidence positively identified Mr. Austin’s vehicle as being involved in an armed robbery in the Village of Orfordville early Tuesday afternoon. Video evidence further showed an adult male matching Casey Austin’s description as being the lone suspect in the armed robbery. Austin’s vehicle was first observed by a Monroe Police Officer in the City of Monroe about 29 minutes after Green County Law Enforcement was notified of the description of the armed robbery suspect’s vehicle, attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit followed, with all vehicles coming to a stop in the business parking lot along 17th Street.
Monroe Police squad car and body camera recordings confirm that when stopped in the parking lot, Mr. Austin pointed a pistol briefly toward Monroe Police and then turned the firearm on himself. As previously indicated, no Monroe Police Officers fired a shot, no Officers were injured nor were any members of the community injured. Preliminary autopsy results indicated that Austin’s cause of death was a single gunshot wound.
Mr. Austin has no record of any previous contacts with Green County Law Enforcement before Tuesday, and Detectives have not established why he came here from Orfordville.
Reports and supporting evidence will be forwarded to the Green County District Attorney for review in the next week or so and this is expected to be the last update concerning this incident.
