1. How can I leave a telephone message for a prisoner?

We do not accept routine telephone messages for any of the prisoners. If you have an emergency message (death in the family, major illness) which can be verified, we will make every effort to pass the message on. All calls out of the Jail are billed "collect." 2. How can I pick up or drop off property for a prisoner?

Prisoner property in the Green County Jail is kept at the jail facility and you need to appear in person. Be prepared to wait, since all property releases must be authorized by the prisoner before we can release it. It is best if you can notify the prisoner ahead of time so that the prisoner can have the proper paperwork ready before you come. If needed, money and small amounts of clothing are accepted for the prisoners.

A property receipt for money and clothing must be filled out by you. These property receipts are located in the lobby of the Green County Sheriff’s Department/jail facility located at 2827 6th Street.

3. How can I write to my friend or relative in jail?

You can write to a prisoner as often as you like. Correspondence must contain your full name and complete address. If it does not contain your full name and address, mail will not be accepted and will be returned to you or the post office. Your correspondence must also contain the prisoner’s full name and be sent to:

We do not accept packages for prisoners. Mail can be sent in envelopes no larger than 10 inches by 13 inches. The following is allowed: letters, correspondence, money orders, and photos which are no larger than 3 inches by 5 inches. No Polaroid photos, stamps, pornography, or nude photos are allowed. Any envelope exceeding a 10 inches by 13 inches size or any envelope appearing to contain nonacceptable items will be returned to the sender or post office at sender’s expense. This includes Federal Express and U.S. Post Office overnight mail.

Prisoner mail is opened and searched for contraband prior to distribution to the prisoner. The jail does not accept hand-delivered mail. All mail must be processed through the U.S. Postal Service.

4. How do I find out if someone is in jail?

You may call 608-328-9598 or the Communication Center at 608-328-9400. The Green County Jail is located at 2827 6th Street, Monroe, WI. The jail houses maximum security prisoners who are awaiting trial or who do not have work release privileges, medium security prisoners, and minimum security prisoners sentenced with Huber Law/Work Release.

In addition, the jail is the booking facility for processing prisoners into jail, and is the centralized location for releases from the jail facilities.

5. How is a prisoner's money handled?

Prisoners have individual cash/commissary accounts. These accounts are used for the prisoner to order items from commissary service and for all money transactions. Only cash or money orders are accepted for prisoners.

6. How can I bond someone out of jail?

Your options for bond include:

1. Come to the jail with cash or credit card and use the kiosk.
   • There is a $2 fee for any cash amount that is put in the kiosk.
   • If you are using a credit card to put money in someone’s account or posting bond, there is a 10% fee of the total amount; minimum charge of $2.50.
2. If during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, bond can be posted at the Green County Justice Center located at 2841 6th Street in Monroe.
3. If the prisoner was charged with a crime or misdemeanor by the Monroe Police Department and brought to the Green County Jail to be held for bond, the bail for that prisoner may have to be posted at the Monroe Police Department, located at 1811 12th Street in Monroe; contact the Monroe Police Department by calling 608-329-2400 to learn more.
   • If the person is being held on other county police department charges, you may contact that municipality to post the bond.
4. You may use the Jail ATM website for bond purposes.

7. How can I put money in an inmate's account?

To add money to an inmate’s account you may:

1. Come in person to the jail at 2827 6th Street in Monroe and put money in via the kiosk (cash or credit).
   1. There is a $2 fee for any cash amount that is put in the kiosk.
   2. If you are using a credit card to put money in someone’s account or posting bond, there is a 10% fee of the total amount; minimum charge of $2.50.

3. Go to the Jail ATM website, create an account and follow the instructions provided.
