Link to pageThe novel coronavirus first appeared in China in 2019. This new virus was similar to SARS-CoV so it was named SARS-CoV-2. The disease caused by the virus was named COVID-19 (CoronaVIrusDisease-2019) to indicate that it was discovered in 2019. SARS-CoV-2 is a respiratory virus. Confirmed cases of the virus began to appear in the United States early in 2020.
